The Planar portals allow Raziel to "gather matter" unto himself and inhabit the Material Realm. Raziel is only able to utilize the portals if he at full strength.
Soul Reaver 1 and 2
Raziel required the use of these conduits to traverse through Nosgoth. However if he was already present in the Material Realm, he could immediately shift back to the Spectral Realm at will.
Defiance
A lone portal is found in the cemetery. Due to Raziel's disobedience of The Elder God, every portal in Nosgoth vanished, forcing Raziel to use corpses as a means to travel to the Material Realm (Raziel simply transfers his spirit into the body and manipulates it's appearance to match his own).
