Mages, also known as Fire Mages were an enemy class introduced and appearing solely in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. They were Humans who wore dark cloaks and could often be found in areas of cult-related activity such as Avernus Cathedral. They possessed some control over the element of Fire and often attacked by summoning flames.

Profile[]

Mages were an enemy classification appearing in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. They were generally seen as Humans wearing a hooded cloak and carrying a book. Their faces were obscured by the hood and their steps masked by the cloak - giving them an appearance of supernaturally floating.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

When approached they would open their books and summon a tongue of flame which flicked forward causing damage. The class were usually found around Avernus and its cathedral, suggesting they were followers of Azimuth and served the religion of Avernus and its secret cult.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide]

Classes[]

Two variants of mage enemies were encountered in Blood Omen which could be distinguished by their coloring.

char0126 (Fire Mage)[]

The standard Fire Mage variant of the Mages were the most numerous of the mage classes. Distinguished by their gray robes, they were found in the Nupraptor's Retreat, the Bone Armor Dungeon, the Hell Realm and a suspicious basement below Coorhagen.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide]

They would typically roam an area holding a book but when provoked would rush forward and open their book as if to read, however they would instead summon a fire attack from the pages of the book that would leap out and cause damage.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

The Mages were not the hardiest of enemies with 12 points of endurance, however their attacks were reasonably potent (at 15 points). As with other human enemies, the fire mages bore Red blood.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

char0191 (Black Fire Mage)[]

The darker Black Fire Mages were the rarer and mor powerful of the Mages classes, distinguished by their darker black (or maroon) robes. They were found in the Lost City, Avernus Cathedral and the Hell realm.[Blood Omen]

As with their predecessors, they would typically roam an area holding a book but when provoked would rush forward and open their book as if to read, however they would instead summon a fire attack from the pages of the book that would leap out and cause damage.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

The Dark Mages were not the hardiest of enemies, but were a step up from their fellow mages, with 15 points of endurance and 20 points attack power. As with other human enemies, the fire mages bore Red blood.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Notes[]

  • The term "Fire Mage" originates in the official strategy guide,[Blood Omen strategy guide] although the term "Mages" was also used in developer assisted magazine previews.[2][2] Some fan guides offer "Mage"[3][4] or "Cultist" as an alternative.[1]
    • A Mage is generally defined as "a practitioner of magic derived from supernatural or occult sources." A regular archetype in role playing games, the term is typically used an alternative for 'wizard' or 'magician' with more negative connotations.[5][6] The words "mage", "magic" and "magician" all share the same etymology denoting one of power and knowledge in supernatural arts.[7]
  • Although not seen in further games, the legacy of the mages can be seen in classes that do appear in later titles: The Cenobites of Avernus in Legacy of Kain: Defiance were an order of priests based in Avernus Cathedral that were specified as serving both the public religion of Avernus and the secret Cult of Hash'ak'gik.[Defiance][Defiance strategy guide] The cancelled multiplayer Nosgoth also had its own branch of Avernus religious officials that originated in the service of the city in the Blood Omen era and fled in the fall of Avernus - those priests eventually became the playable class of Prophets.[8]
