"The Legions of the Nemesis are on the march from the north, crushing all in their path. 'Twas not too long ago that the Nemesis was known as William the Just, a caring and gentle benefactor of the land. But, as his army grew in strength and he himself grew in power, the veil of tyranny fell and one kingdom was not enough. So many cities, so many dead. Willendorf will be sure to follow. The Nemesis must be stopped or all shall be lost..."
―Ariel — Listen (file info)[src]

The Soldiers of the Legions of the Nemesis, also known as Nemesis Warriors, were the warriors and guards of the Legions of the Nemesis faction - representing the military of the Land of the Nemesis and the throne of King William the Just - also known as 'The Nemesis'. They were featured heavily in the later stages of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain where they guarded areas around the Land of the Nemesis and Stahlberg. They were also enemies in the Battle of the Last Stand, where they could be fed from freely in battles with the Army of the Last Hope and its soldiers.

Nemesis Warriors were an enemy classification introduced and appearing solely in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. They acted as the guards protecting the Stronghold of William the Just and the Land of the Nemesis, but they could also be seen as an invading force in Stahlberg and its surroundings. Like the guards of most other areas, the Nemesis Warriors served to keep the peace and protect the human population of the area, however the were much more aggressive and hostile than the soldiers of other areas. They also made up the rank and file of the Legions of the Nemesis, the military of William the Just and the Land of the Nemesis. They wore distinctive red armor with a black trim and golden highlights, along with notable white spikes - sometimes accompanied by symbology representing the Land of the Nemesis - such as the falcon.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Kain first heard of the Legions of the Nemesis after defeating Azimuth and returning to Ariel at the Pillars of Nosgoth, where Ariel lamented the tyrannical advance of the legions and their inevitable defeat of Willendorf. After travelling to Willendorf, Kain would meet with king Ottmar and learn more of his dilemma involving Elzevir the dollmaker and the stolen soul of the Princess of Willendorf.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9]

After travelling through a secret tunnel from Willendorf, Kain would emerge in the Northeastern territories and would first encounter the Nemesis Warriors in a battlement on the southern outskirts of Stahlberg and he soon found that the Legions had conquered and decimated the formerly pristine University town of Stahlberg. They they would prove dangerous enemies as he progressed on to the House of the Dollmaker and once he had defeated Elzevir, Kain could optionally infiltrate the Land of the Nemesis and the Stronghold of William the Just facing the massed ranks of the Legions.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide]

Returning to Willendorf, Kain helped Ottmar restore his daughters soul but Kain bade Ottmar to use his Army of the Last Hope to resist the advance of the Legions of the Nemesis. The two armies clashed in the Battle of the Last Stand at the Plains of Blood, where Kain would advance along with the army of hope facing the full might of the Legions of the Nemesis - although he could fight and feed from either side. However during the battel Ottmar was slain and the Legions proved victorious. With the Army of hope retreating and Nosgoth apparently lost a time streaming device Kain had been carrying activated and propelled him fifty years into the past.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide]

Finding himself in the Pre-Blood Omen era, Kain seized the opportunity to proceed northward and infiltrate the Stronghold again - this time passing through the pristine Stahlberg and another settlement before gaining access to the castle. Again the Legions of the Nemesis would prove the main enemies, although in peacetime they were far more sparse and less aggressive. Battling the troops through the stronghold, Kain would eventually face William himself and assassinate the young King - before he grew to become the Nemesis. William's guards rushed to his aid but were powerless to stop Kain before he used another Time-streaming device to return to his own time.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide]

They would not be seen again for the rest of the game - or indeed the rest of the series - as Kain's alteration of history ensured that the Legions of the Nemesis would never come to be and William's military never rose to become a tyrannical power. [Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9]

Classes[]

The 'Nemesis Warrior' soldiers of the Legions of the Nemesis came in several distinct variations. Generally they classes could be divided by the weapons they used but more broadly speaking the classes generally fell into three categories, each with a subtly different but unique appearance: those bearing short range weapons had short spikes on the side of the helmet that twisted like goat horns and pointed forward; those bearing long range weapons had larger spikes that curved downward; and those more experienced 'veteran' classes bore smaller spikes that were more numerous. Behind the scenes[]

char0044 (Standard-bearers)[]

At least one class of Nemesis Warriors was cut from the game. The standard bearers of the Legions of the Nemesis can be found in game files and magazine previews, but only appear in the final game in the cutscenes accompanying the Battle of the Last Stand.

Their sprite appearance seems to suggest that they would have appeared as a non-player class in the Battle of the Last Stand, but no known build utilises them in this manner.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1][2][3][4]

The stats of the standard bearers suggests that they were fairly typical of Willendorf's troops with a decent endurance (40 points) but no discernible attack power.[1]

Notes[]

  • The terms "Legions of the Nemesis" is used throughout the game as a description of the troops of William the Just/The Nemesis - which is carried into Silicon Knights Blood Omen FAQ and the official strategy guide among others. The official strategy guide generally refer to the troops as "Nemesis Warriors" while developer assisted magazine previews refer to "Nemesis soldiers".[5] Other internals classifications refer to them as "hord" or "horde". Troops are generally classified by their weaponry with internal classifications combining "hord" with weapons to give class titles including "horde 1", "spike horde", "axe horde", "horde 2 hand sord", "horde cest1", "horde mace", ''"horde short sword", "horde scimitar" and "horde standard"
