Legacy of Kain's 25th Anniversary

2021 is a very important year for the Legacy of Kain franchise. 1st November marks 25 years since the release of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and the official start of the series. Not only that but 31st October is another important date as Soul Reaver 2 turns 20 years old.

To celebrate these milestones we thought we’d return to our partnership with the Ancient’s Den and produce some videos to turn the light on these games and illuminate some of the original features that have come out for them in the last couple of years.

For Soul Reaver 2 we’ll be going through the beta that was released earlier in the year and giving a detailed run through on the difference there. You can find that video here.

For Blood Omen we’ve got something a little more special planned. As we ran through the Soul Reaver alphas last year we thought it was unfair to leave out the Blood Omen alphas that we had helped expose previously, so we’ve gone back to give those the full ‘Lost content series’  treatment. The Firew Glyph altar in Soul Reaver

The Fire Glyph Altar was an optional location in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. It was one of several glyph altars Raziel could access in Nosgoth in the Soul Reaver era.

The altar was accessed by swimming through a flooded tunnel in the Razielim Territory and contained a distinctive stone statue resembling a demon. Activation of the altar allowed Raziel to gain the Fire Glyph.

Concept art of Nupraptor's Retreat in Soul Reaver

Concept art from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver depciting the external appearance of Nupraptor's Retreat as it appears in that game. The Retreat first appeared in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain as the fortress of Mind Guardian Nupraptor and served as the first boss dungeon in that game, where it was seen as a Skull shaped edifice perched atop a cliff. The area reappeared in Soul Reaver, set millenia later, but the centuries had taken their toll and the skull had fallen from the cliff with only the jaw-platform remaining above. The concept reveals that it was originally planned to dsiplay more of the trademarks of the original structure, with a number of pylons, the crown of the skull and the cave behind clearly visible. These ideas were toned down in the final release of Soul Reaver and the skull blocked most of the cave with only a single bare pylon visible.
