Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered launches on PS5, PS4 Dec 10[]
In 1999, games were built differently. Deep narratives were uncommon and fully voiced cut-scenes were rare. Soul Reaver had both and quickly became a classic.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Soul Reaver, Aspyr is proud to announce Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.Remaster pillars defined
As with our work on Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, the key to a great Remaster is to bring a classic game to modern hardware with enough visual and quality-of-life improvements to feel natural, while carefully preserving the integrity of the original. We want new fans to join the Soul Reaver faithful in reliving Raziel’s adventures.Engineering goal: Performance with pixel-perfect preservation
Thankfully Crystal Dynamics was able to provide us with the source code, so we started with the original engine and a complete set of assets. This foundation ensured we could deliver the exact same combat, puzzles, and boss fights, with the same balance and feel, as the original. With its environmental storytelling and the innovative mechanics that allowed players to shift between the material and spectral realms, Soul Reaver pushed the limits of computer memory in the ‘90s. The way we’ve engineered the title will preserve that legacy for players returning to Nosgoth or visiting for the first time.
But we didn’t want to stop at the original toggle between realms. We also integrated a toggle between classic and modern game art, on the fly, without ever having a hit to performance.Gameplay Goal: Surprise and delight lifelong hardcore fans
The Soul Reaver game narratives are powerful and beautifully complex. Starring Michael Bell as Raziel, Simon Templeton as Kain, and Tony Jay as the Elder God, Soul Reaver 1 & 2 feature some of the most iconic performances in video game history. And of course, kudos to Amy Hennig’s work writing and directing this visionary game when the tools to do so were burgeoning. We did, however, want to surprise and delight our most hardcore fans, so the conversation evolved into what additions we could make that wouldn’t upset the original design intentions but would add to the overall experience. Here’s what we came up with:
- Control Improvements: Soul Reaver launched while the D-PAD was the dominant control method. We’ve ensured with DualShock 4 and Dual Sense that analog control feels and plays as great in Soul Reaver as it did in Soul Reaver 2.
- Camera Upgrades: We’ve mapped the camera in Soul Reaver to the right stick which allows us to move the camera on the Y-Axis. Of course, there weren’t robust skyboxes in the original because you couldn’t look up. So we made some! Enjoy right stick mapping to see the vibrant skies and platforms above.
- Trophies! For now, just know we’re using trophies as our wink and nod to the community for the most iconic gameplay moments. We’ll share more specifics at a later date.
- Map & Compass: Nosgoth is a vast, open world. Navigating, even with quick travel, can be daunting for first-timers. We added a map and compass to assist with finding the next objective, so you’ll never feel completely lost, even if you decide to play through optional content. The map is a brand new, never-before-seen map of Nosgoth co-created by Aspyr, Crystal Dynamics and key members of the Legacy of Kain community. It is one of the most beautiful additions to the game and a celebration of the fans who have kept the games alive for so long.
- Photo Mode: A popular feature from Tomb Raider I-III Remastered returns! We’ll include our photo mode to let you showcase some of the best gameplay moments of Soul Reaver 1 & 2.
- And a few more surprises: Where’s the fun in spoiling everything already?
We want the games to look the way they did in your mind.
Here are the art changes we made:Soul Reaver cut-scenes rendered with higher fidelity models: Source code does not always have the assets to render cut-scenes with newer assets. Our engineering teams combed through the archives to find the right files to render the cut scenes with new, higher fidelity assets. This makes the transition from modern gameplay mode to cut-scene seamless.
New Hero models for Raziel and Kain: These models are inspired by the look of the original pre-rendered cutscenes.Glowing eyes and Wraith Blade: We’ve added a glow to Raziel’s eyes and the Wraith Blade to take advantage of lighting upgrades
Real-time shadows: Applied to all characters and objectsNew Enemy and Boss models: I’ll admit these are a bit scarier than I remembered!
Day and Night cycle (SR) A legacy feature that was cut from the final release has been restored to add mood and atmosphere to Nosgoth.Graphics toggle: While we did add many improvements to textures, UI, and VFX, any point during gameplay, including in Photo mode, you can swap back to the original graphics.
Thank you to the original Soul Reaver 1 and 2 teams, Crystal Dynamics, and the community for letting us visit Nosgoth and resurrect Raziel one more time. We’ll see you on December 10. Pre-orders are available today on PlayStation Store!
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered – first look at bosses, new Map details[]
Remastered Boss updates and reveals
Each boss encounter in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is designed to challenge the player’s mastery of Raziel’s abilities. Our goal with the character models was to improve the textures as much as we could while ensuring that they blend in with the apocalyptic world.Melchiah–The first of Kain’s lieutenants Raziel must defeat. This battle takes place in the Necropolis where Melchiah chases Raziel down while phasing through gates, making the spectral realm no longer safe. Strategically use the environment to expose Melchiah’s vulnerabilities and use his own devices against him.
Melchiah received a full texture overhaul with darkened skin and a slimier body-feel. The bones and skeletal mapping are now more realistic and gory and his eye color was adjusted to match the original look.Zephon–Fought in a dilapidated cathedral, Zephon has evolved into an insect-like creature, fusing with this towering structure. You’ll need to ascend to the highest chambers and become willingly ensnared to be able to confront him. Search the room for any elemental advantages which could aid you in this endeavor.
Zephon was too desaturated, so we’ve completely repainted his face.Rahab–This battle occurs in a flooded abbey. Rahab is fully immune to water, which is lethal to Raziel. Use Raziel’s agility to avoid Rahab’s deadly close-range and long-range attacks by jumping and make use of your newly gained Telekinetic projectile ability to exploit Rahab’s extreme vulnerability to sunlight.
Rahab’s head has been remodeled, so the eyes now have a reddish glow which gives him a menacing look. We’ve also altered the fangs to look more vampiric and made his skin color a little more gray.Dumah–In a desolated fortress, Dumah awaits reanimation. Just like his other brethren, Dumah is invulnerable to any attacks, so Raziel has to be cunning and lure him to a flame powerful enough to melt even the hardest metal, all while avoiding tremendous earthquakes caused by Dumah’s incredible strength.
Dumah’s armor is now a lot dirtier and has patches of mold and blood all over it (considering he was impaled for centuries).Kain–Raziel first confronts Kain at the Pillars where he must be swift and strike Kain three times to gain the Soul Reaver. The second encounter takes place in the Chronoplast, where the tiered arena makes evasion even more challenging. Track your target’s movements closely and make haste to strike him with the Soul Reaver. If you cannot reach him in time, use your Telekinetic projectile to stop Kain from using his powerful lightning attack. The encounter is intense and dramatic, but we won’t spoil how it concludes. Pre-order to find out!
The models for Kain in both Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2 needed to be completely re-designed to mitigate textural issues. With the increased polygon count we felt it was important to bring his look a lot closer to the Kain we got to see in the original FMVs, which was a lot more detailed and showed more-or-less what the original intent was for the character. The original model in SR1 was especially limited so now both games have a Kain that looks consistent between the two titles.Map & Compass details & gameplay
In the original versions of the games, players often found themselves wandering the vast, twisting landscapes of Nosgoth, relying heavily on memory and environmental cues to navigate. The introduction of the Map and Compass marks a thoughtful enhancement that blends modern gameplay conveniences with the preservation of the explorative experience the original titles were known for. The Compass gently nudges the player in the right direction without giving away specific details of where to go or what to do next and the Map is more of a reference tool than a guide.
We also included a collection tracker for any Health and Energy power-ups so that you know if you’ve gotten all of the collectibles within each area. All of the major Nosgoth features are present and accurately condensed based on the setting and gameplay. For fans who might feel that these additions are a major departure from the original games, we’ve made sure to incorporate a toggle-off function for the compass.
In addition to its gameplay utility, the map is also a wonderful art piece that was created in collaboration with our development team, community advisors, artists, and designers at Crystal Dynamics. We knew accuracy was paramount, so we worked hard to pull from the original source art, design documents, and clues from game lore. We also incorporated community reviews to ensure nothing had been missed. Thanks to these efforts, the map is accurate enough to feature in the new lore reader bonus menu – identifying the location of each lore entry.
For design direction, Crystal Dynamics designers used a heavily inked approach that sits beautifully with the existing art, creating a stunning new way to visualize the world of Nosgoth. The Map and Compass are there to serve as welcome tools for exploration, ensuring that the remastered versions remain both a tribute to the classics and a modernized, more player-friendly experience.
The Aspyr Team looks forward to sharing more information before the launch of Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered on December 10, 2024!
The Legacy of Kain series: retrospective with original developers[]
From its popular 1996 debut, The Legacy of Kain series has a long-standing history across PlayStation, from introducing memorable characters to pioneering in 3D game design. So, with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered on its way to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Blood Omen 2 coming to PlayStation Plus Classics, it’s the perfect time to dig up the details on why The Legacy of Kain series has endured. As a bonus, the original developers join us to recall some relevant anecdotes on the way…
- “I’m super proud of the way we wove our time travel plot throughout the games – writing time travel stories is hard!”
– Amy Hennig, Design Manager (Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain), Director and Lead Writer (Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2, Legacy of Kain: Defiance)
1996 – Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain – PlayStation – Silicon Knights/Crystal Dynamics
Action-adventures took a turn for the macabre as The Legacy of Kain series introduced us to the shadowy world of Nosgoth. Blood Omen set the tone with Kain seeking a cure for his vampiric curse, only to slip deeper into a moral abyss.Engaging hack-and-slash gameplay mixed with magic, shapeshifting, and puzzle-layered exploration cast an intoxicating spell encased by a smart and gripping story that laid the groundwork for all that followed. So it was no surprise that the triumphant debut of the titular vampire lord was met with a craving for more. Only three years later, that craving was satisfied…
- “It was one of the best-looking games for PlayStation.”
– Daniel Cabuco, lead enemy artist (Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver); lead artist (Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2) and art director (Legacy of Kain: Defiance)
1999 – Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – PlayStation – Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Interactive
If Blood Omen began the crimson-stained lineage for the series in 2D, Soul Reaver took up the trail and innovated it into fully formed 3D. This time the consequences of Kain’s actions are directly in your hands, assuming control of the iconic Raziel, a former vampire lieutenant slain by Kain. Resurrected into a wraith, Raziel is given his mission by The Elder God – to destroy Kain and restore the now-broken wasteland of Nosgoth to its former glory. The evolution into 3D allowed the series to push the boundaries of its presentation even more, especially when teamed with the already captivating narrative, which allowed players to travel between the material and spectral realms.
“The writing, dialogue, and incredible voice acting all took things to the next level,” says Cabuco. “At every point the artists, designers, musicians, and engineers asked themselves how they could make the experience better. It was an incredible moment in time where every aspect was firing on all cylinders.”It’s a sentiment shared by the game’s chief of engineering, Scott Krotz: “The streaming technology we developed was great, and I think we only had one loading screen in the entire game once getting into it. The combination of solid gameplay and technology, a dark world full of interesting lore, a great story and characters, and amazing voice actors all came together to make it a pretty special game.”
- “The amazingly well directed cinematics with lip sync were simply mind blowing.”
– Monika Erosova, head of development (Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered)
2001 – Soul Reaver 2 – PlayStation 2 – Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Interactive
After Soul Reaver introduced the iconic Raziel, its sequel vastly expanded on his human past, traveling through time to reveal Nosgoth’s secrets which have immense repercussions on not only Raziel and his home, but Kain as well.Between its combat, puzzles, and exploration, Soul Reaver 2 successfully elevated much of what made its predecessor so well received, but a particular spotlight fell on its story and characters. “Amy Hennig masterfully interconnected Raziel’s journey back to Blood Omen,” says Erosova. “I enjoyed exploring the world in different eras.”
“Soul Reaver 2 was originally supposed to be on the original PlayStation, but our team was determined to use the power of PS2 to elevate the game’s graphics and animation,” reveals Amy Hennig, who worked as design manager on Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, and director and lead writer on Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2 and Legacy of Kain: Defiance. “We ported the game onto the new hardware in a matter of weeks.”2002 – Blood Omen 2 – PlayStation 2 – Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Interactive
In a smart connection to the time travel chaos of Soul Reaver 2, the series went back to its roots in Blood Omen 2 by exploring an alternate timeline set after the events of the very first Blood Omen. This gave players a chance to enjoy Kain’s undead life again, aside from his antagonistic turn in the Soul Reaver games, layering a now rich and involving lore. While paying homage to its vampiric roots where Kain is able to feed off enemies or civilians to replenish his health, novel gameplay elements like weapon durability kept the combat and challenge fresh.
2003 – Legacy of Kain: Defiance – PlayStation 2 – Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Interactive
After two games each where we played as Kain or Raziel, it was perhaps inevitable that we’d get a chance to control both characters in the same game – which is where Legacy of Kain: Defiance swooped in. “Given we were revealing crucial things about our characters’ motivations and the world that shaped them, it was critical for us to make Kain and Raziel dual protagonists, and to cut back and forth between their playable chapters,” explains Hennig.Using different abilities helped differentiate between the bitter enemies in terms of gameplay, while the story offered the now expected – and satisfying – philosophical pondering on determinism and morality to resolve Kain and Raziel’s blood-stained conflict.
“We wanted to tell a great, complex story with flawed but compelling characters in a captivating and original world,” says Hennig. “It’s incredibly gratifying to see how formative and indelible these games and stories have been for our audience.”You’ll be able to get a taste of the series’ lasting legacy when Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Blood Omen 2 arrive on PlayStation Plus Premium November 19, and when Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered hits PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on December 10.

Through the preservation efforts of Crystal Dynamics, Aspyr, and key community members like Ben Lincoln (who also created the fantastic fan-driven website https://thelostworlds.net/), you can explore four distinct areas: Undercity, Smokestack, Retreat, and Forges. Each provides a glimpse into alternative visions of the original Soul Reaver. You can explore the Lost Levels as Raziel, although you may find missing textures or areas that feel under construction. Think of the Lost Levels as an interactive museum, an accessible copy of historic artifacts, preserved in their original state.Undercity: The human citadel features an extensive subterranean area that would have become accessible after Raziel’s second battle with Kain. The Undercity was the home of a vampire-worshipping human priestess and her followers. Defeating her would have granted Raziel the ability to possess the minds of most humans and vampires.
Smokestack: After exiting the Undercity, Raziel could have traveled to the massive fortress of his final remaining brother, Turel. In Turel’s lair, Raziel would have earned an enhanced telekinetic ability that would allow him to traverse the giant Smokestack and use the giant turbine in the middle of the room to create an updraft, allowing him to fly to the top to reach Kain’s mountain retreat, high above Nosgoth’s landscape.Retreat: Kain’s personal lair, perched on the mountaintops between Turel’s fortress and the Silenced Cathedral. With the Reaver’s power amplified by Kain’s soul, Raziel would then discover a bridge connected directly to the top of the Silenced Cathedral and use its titanic pipe organ to destroy every remaining vampire in Nosgoth.
Forges: Soul Reaver was originally designed with six elemental enhancements for the Reaver. In addition to fire, Raziel would have discovered forges allowing him to imbue the weapon with sunlight, water, stone, sound, and spirit energy, using environmental sources scattered throughout the game world.Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Soundtracks: An auditory legacy
Lastly, immerse yourself in the haunting melodies of Nosgoth with the extended playlists of the soundtracks from both Soul Reaver 1 & 2. Resurrecting a Classic: Raziel Returns to Xbox in Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered[]
The Legacy of the Legacy of Kain
Very few franchises in gaming history boast the narrative depth and artistic ambition of Legacy of Kain. Since its debut in 1996 with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, the series has delivered an intricate saga of betrayal, destiny, and free will. Among its chapters, Soul Reaver stands out as a groundbreaking entry, weaving the tragic tale of Raziel, a once-loyal lieutenant of Kain, resurrected to seek vengeance against his creator.Soul Reaver introduced players to a hauntingly beautiful world, brimming with gothic architecture, complex puzzles, and a legendary narrative. Its dual-realm exploration, allowing Raziel to shift between the material and spectral planes, was a revolutionary feature together with seamless level streaming that cemented the game’s place in history. Raziel’s journey from vengeance to self-discovery resonates even today, making him one of gaming’s most beloved anti-heroes.
Bringing Soul Reaver Back to Life
We had the opportunity to speak with Monika Erosova, Head of Development for the remaster, about the incredible effort it took to bring Soul Reaver into the modern era. Erosova described the process as “a labor of love,” with a focus on preserving the essence of the original while reimagining its visuals for modern hardware. The remaster boasts meticulously updated textures, dynamic shadows for characters and objects, and brand-new character models. Raziel and Kain designs, in particular, were treated with care to honor their iconic look while amplifying details such as Raziel’s tattered wings now having translucent edges.
“We aimed to match their looks from their highly detailed FMV render models, but also made sure that they will still fit within the in-game world,” Erosova said, highlighting that preserving the original lighting played a critical role in creating the remaster’s atmospheric tone, ensuring Nosgoth feels as eerie and immersive as ever. The addition of the day and night cycle further enhances this and provides a more varied gameplay experience when returning to the areas you visited previously. The original Soul Reaver FMV intro is perhaps one of the most legendary introductions into a video game ever. However, the original game release had severely limited resolution and simply does not hold up on modern screens anymore.
“My dream was always to be able to update it one day and that has finally come to fruition!” exclaimed Erosova. “The archive provided us with the necessary source files and while some parts were missing and had to be remade, it was enough for us to be able to fully reconstruct the FMV in HD graphics. It was not an easy feat, but we pushed through until we were able to render all the scenes in highest fidelity. We hope that fans will enjoy this latest version of the iconic FMV just as we do.”Being an artist at heart, Erosova felt straight at home in her role on this project: “I simply love texture archaeology. I collected a vast library of reference books during my modding days so I was able to apply all my in-depth knowledge of the Soul Reaver games and also managed to find even more source textures than ever before, making the Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered superior to any of my previous modding work, becoming the definitive experience.”
She also mentioned the people who have been her inspiration for all these years: “It would definitely have to be Amy Hennig, Daniel Cabuco, basically the whole Soul Reaver team. I would like to send special thanks to Daniel for being such an amazing mentor figure – without his advice I would not be where I am as an artist!”Recreating the FMV, however, was not the only improvement included in this release. The team also added many quality-of-life improvements such as customizable controls with camera movement on the right analogue stick or a mouse if you prefer, the photo mode, a cutscene skipper (super useful for repeated playthroughs), multi-language support with subtitles, extensive Bonus Materials section and much more.
“We even managed to restore the dynamic music which was missing in the original pc release of Soul Reaver!” Erosova adds. “These games would not be the same without the atmospheric music of Kurt Harland and the way it reacts in real time to the player’s experiences in the game.”Erosova is also a devoted fan of the series and has shared her love of Raziel through cosplay and countless many projects such as the most recent artbook called The Art of Soul Reaver, created several texture mods for both Tomb Raider and Soul Reaver games, and regularly posts lore videos on YouTube on her The Ancient’s Den channel co-maintained by her fellow lore master, Bazielim, who is also well known figure in the Legacy of Kain community.
Features Overview

Xbox-Specific Features: Optimized for Xbox consoles, this remaster includes 4K resolution support, faster load times, and enhanced framerates and textures.Additionally, the Bonus Materials Menu allows players to dive deeper into the Soul Reaver universe.
