Kain II, also known as Kain 2, was a cancelled Legacy of Kain game, the planned second title in the series and the earliest concept for a sequel to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. The project was commissioned by Activision and included competing proposals by both Crystal Dynamics and Silicon Knights, with the deteriorating relationship between developers presumably ending production. The project was never officially announced and no associated parties have commented on the title, possibly for legal reasons.
After the release of Blood Omen, Activision commissioned a sequel through Crystal Dynamics, which carried out initial concept artwork. Dissatisfied with the quality of the artwork, Activision actively sought other developers to assist in the project, eventually inviting Silicon Knights to develop a competing Kain 2 proposal. The deteriorating relationship and legal process between the two developers presumably ended production of the title.[1][2]
The Kain 2 concept was at the heart of a lengthy legal battle between Silicon Knights and Crystal Dynamics which took place in late 1997; as such the existence of the project was not known outside of the interested parties until investigations into the 'demise' of Silicon Knights by 'Divine Shadow' in late 2012 uncovered evidence of the project. Neither Silicon Knights, Crystal Dynamics or Activision have publicly acknowledged or commented upon the project and may be legally prevented from doing so. No artwork from either proposal has been identified as such and the details of both projects are entirely unknown.[1][2]
