- Good and Evil is one of the themes in the Legacy of Kain series, in the world of Nosgoth each character is capable of both good and evil, their actions effecting the land for better or worse. Across the games this theme is played out with morally ambiguous characters with questionable methods to achieve their goals that impact the people, human and vampire alike. Their choices that change the coarse of history and time itself resulting in outcomes that are favorable to one and not the other, due to manipulation of events, regardless all the main characters do actions that are both benevolent and malevolent with results the lead the lands of Nosgoth to where it stands now.
- The Ancient Vampires were able to imprison the Hylden in the Demon Realm, banishing them from Nosgoth for all time, but it would be turned out to be all a manipulation by the Elder God. He convinced the Ancients to wage war on the Hylden race when they would not prey to him and they have since been trapped in the demon realm and became deformed. As punishment they Hylden cursed the vampires with bloodthirst, sterility and immortality, removing them from the wheel of fate and causing their god to renounce them. Worse still the Pillars now chose humans as guardians as Vampires are no longer born.
- To keep the Hylden imprisoned the Vampire forced the dark gift upon the human successors, creating new vampire guardians so to keep the Hylden imprisoned and balance maintained. In time the humans rebelled led by Mobius, Mortanius and Ariel, resulting in humanity claiming the Pillars, reclaiming their freedom and driving the Vampires out. As the centuries woudl pass however the Circle became corrupted and would fail in its true duties, resulting in its fall.
- The Sarafan Brotherhood was founded and under the new Circles Orders went on a crusade against vampires across Nosgoth, nearly driving them to extinction, however they became fanatical and sadistic, becoming no better then the vampires they so despised.
- After centuries a dark conspiracy made by the Hylden resulted in the murder of much of the Circle by Vorador and the assasination of Ariel, resulting in the Pillars to become corrupted. Nopraptor was driven insane and used his magic and telepathy to pass the maddness across the other circles. With Mortanius as thier puppet the Hylden orchestrated the downfall of the Circle and their freedom into Nostogth.
- Kain, the first Vampire guardian of Balance to emerge in centuries would go on a quest for revenge that would have dire ramifications for all of Nosgoth, human and vampire alike. As he slew the other guardians and restored the Pillars he would become a pawn of Mobieus in his all consuming hatred for vampires, he sent Kain back in time before the human king William the Just became the Nemesis. Kain killed William preventing the rise of the Nemesis, however it also changed history to Mobieus desire. The Nemesis was gone but Wililam was now a martyr, Vampires were hunted to extinction and Mobeius turned them upon Kain to undue the Vampires return. Kain would kill Mobeius and uncover the true conspirator in Mortanius, he slew the Necromancer and was given a choice, to give up his life to restore Nosgoth or keep his life and damn the pillars and the land to darkness. Kain chose preservation and caused the Pillars to collapse, seeing there was no true choice in the matter, from there he rallied all the vampires and began the conquest of the land that led to the rise of his Empire.
