A Glyphwright was a member of the Hylden race who specialized in the use and manipulation of glyph energy.
Biography
Although it is unknown whether they were called glyphwrights prior to Blood Omen 2, it is certain that glyphwrights existed before that time period. They were Hylden who were responsible for the use of glyph energy in Hylden society. This role is quite prominent since glyph energy seems to feature very prominently in Hylden societies.
After the war against the Ancients and the Hylden, the glyphwrights were, like every other Hylden, banished to the Demon Dimension where they stayed for an extended period of time. However, following the paradox that occurred at the end of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, the Hylden managed to infiltrate the Material Realm. The now free Hylden decided to introduce glyph energy to all of Nosgoth, specifically Meridian. This required the involvement of glyphwrights who set the glyph energy systems up and managed it.
Because the Hylden's rule in Nosgoth was secretive and hidden behind the human Sarafan Order, glyphwrights couldn't be allowed to roam the streets in their Hylden form. To this end the glyphwrights used a machine which would completely alter their physical appearance, allowing them to be passed off as ordinary human beings.
The defeat of the The Hylden Lord at the hands of Kain forced all the Hylden, including glyphwrights, back into the demon dimension.
