January 23, 1999 prototype of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Behind the scenes[]
This is the earliest available build of Soul Reaver and due to this, it's a lot more prone to crashing than others. Its debug menu can only be activated by pressing square and circle, clicking L3 has not yet been implemented yet.
There are several rooms which are missing in this build, including the Cistern and Turel´s audience chamber which do not seem to have been inserted at the time. While the Retreat areas are listed in the debug menu, those are actually not present either in the bigfile and cannot be loaded. One of the major changes in comparison to the other builds is the wide tunnel coming from Aluka 1 (the area with the ship). The tunnel there is not a dead end but a possible alternate entrance or an exit for the Drowned Abbey. This has been walled off in the other builds. Some items are placed incorrectly such as the drawbridge in Silenced Cathedral, as it is twisted at an angle. Most warp gates also have placeholder textures and some areas as well (notably the southern entrance to the Sanctuary of the Clans). Some objects are also different. The soul well in the Underworld has a two-level raised design, unlike the flatter design chosen in the later builds and retail version.
