"The Matriarch of Avernus, the Lady Azimuth: her magical planing skills summoned demons through runes inscribed in human blood."
―Kain — Listen (file info)[src]

Demons were a class of enemies encountered by Kain in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Generally Demons were monstrous entities originating from another realm. They were usually associated with Azimuth and the Dimensional incursion she opened at Avernus. At least four Demon variants were seen in Blood Omen and more could be seen in later games.

Profile[]

"Avernus was a religious autocracy, with the Cathedral as its dais of power. Though the city lay in ruins, the Cathedral remained untouched. The demons knew better than to bite the hand that feeds them..."
―Kain — Listen (file info)[src]

Demons were a class of enemy introduced in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and later appearing in other titles. They were generally portrayed as extradimensional entities from another, 'demonic realm. Though appearing in other locations, the majority of the demons seemed to be associated with Azimuth the Planar - the Guardian of the Pillar of Dimension and matriarch of Avernus who summoned demons to attack her city.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Kain would first encounter Demons when passing through the ruined sections of Avernus city and he issued comments about their apparent feral 'beastly' nature. Progressing through the city Kain could find demons inhabiting Avernus Cathedral and in particular within its Hell Realm. Aside from this Demons could also be found in several secret areas such as the Lost City and other bonus areas.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Demons came in several variations: each with a differing appearance, a different color and different 'elemental' associations. They were among the most dangerous enemies faced in the game and tended to be formidable opponents with substantial endurance and attack power and with unique 'elemental' attacks for each class. Most classes also bore poisoned Green blood which made feeding from them inadvisable.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Types of Demon[]

The Demons seen in Blood Omen came in several distinct variations. The below summarises the various sub-classes:

char0021 (Cerberi)[]

Cerberi[Blood Omen strategy guide] are a class of enemy, introduced and appearing only in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, where they were portrayed as two-headed, fire-breathing undead animals with Black blood. They seemed to be aligned with the Demons, and were encountered primarily in Avernus Cathedral's Hell dungeon.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8]

Cerberi were among the more dangerous enemies Kain happened upon on his quest, with considerable endurance (30 points) and attack power (30 points), a long-ranged fiery attack, and only black blood to yield.[Blood Omen][1] Fortunately for him, they were also extraordinarily rare; one stalked a lava-filled cave in the Ruined Land, and twelve of them inhabited a hellish section of Avernus Cathedral, wandering its confines alongside Giant demons, Ogres, Lightning spitters and Liches, among others.[Blood Omen] Kain did not issue any comment on them during his travels, and it was not apparent whether they had been summoned to Avernus by Azimuth's magic, or were already inhabiting the Material Realm before her rampage took place.[Blood Omen]

The Cerberi bore the same dark red skin sported by the Giant Demons, with vicious grey-white claws and teeth, and a spiked collar adorning each neck. They are the only creatures in Nosgoth known to be dicephalic, which lends credence to the idea that they may be natives of the Demon Realm, or the possibility that they were among the creatures created by the Dark Eden triad, despite their not sharing the green blood of their counterparts in either instance.[Blood Omen]

When in combat, they would rear upward and expel twin blasts of flame from their mouths, with the right head's attack always preceding the left. They did not possess any particular strengths or weaknesses, and were vulnerable to all offensive tactics at Kain's disposal. If slain conventionally, they would simply collapse to one side.[Blood Omen]

Though the majority of the Hell dungeon was strewn with mangled human corpses, one Cerberus was seen guarding a live captive, evincing some level of apparent self-restraint.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8]

char0034 (Giant Demons)[]

"I felt its eyes upon me, eager, hungry, as if it longed to rip my heart out and eat it before me as I died. I laughed as the onslaught began. Perhaps when it was over, it would be the other way around."
―Kain — Listen (file info)[src]

Giant Demons were a class of Demon enemy introduced in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain where they appeared as massive red skinned creatures with four arms, large spikes on their shoulders and the sides of their heads, and an affinity for fire - usually manifested in various fiery attacks from the hands.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Azimuth and her followers summoned these creatures to destroy the city of Avernus around the time of Kain's death and rebirth as a Vampire. They were the second type of demon Kain encountered as he made his way through the city. Kain commented on how the creature looked at him with hunger, as if it wanted to rip out his heart and devour it. As the battle began, Kain mused that he might do just that to the demon.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8]

The Giant demons were perhaps the most dangerous enemies Kain happened upon on his quest, with formidable endurance endurance (120 points) and attack power (50 points each strike in a double combo), a long reach, and only poisoned Green blood to yield.[Blood Omen][1] The Giant Demons could be found in the ruined sections of Avernus City, Avernus Cathedral and the Hell realm - but also appeared in the Lost City and the New Present Stronghold of William the Just.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen/11] They were not explicitly seen in further games, however the Black demons of Soul Reaver 2 and the Fire demons of Soul Reaver 2 and Fire demons of Defiance seem to be closely related and may well be intended to be the same species or at least inspired by them.[Soul Reaver 2][Defiance]

char0035 (Ogres)[]

"The beast paused for a moment, drooling in anticipation of the fine meal he saw before him. To his disappointment, he would not find me such easy prey."
―Kain — Listen (file info)[src]

Ogres were a class of Demon enemy introduced in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain where they appeared as large green skinned creatures sporting brown trousers with spikes protruding from their temples, shoulders and back. Alongside melee attacks they demonstrated an affinity for poison and were able to belch a green cloud which would cause poison effects and require Anti-Toxin to cleanse.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Ogres were some of the most dangerous enemies that Kain could encounter with formidable endurance (100 points) and attack power (25 points each strike in a double combo), long reach, and a long range poison breath attack that could inflict poison damage. In addition only poisoned Green blood could be gleaned from them.[Blood Omen][1]

Like the rest of their demon brethren, the Ogres were first encountered by Kain as he made his way through the ruined city of Avernus and he issued a comment upon meeting them for the first time, noting that the demon saw him as a meal. The majority of the ogres could be found through Avernus City but they could also be found in the Hell Realm.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8]

There were not seen in later titles but bore some similarities to the Acid demons of Soul Reaver 2 and the Lesser demons of Blood Omen 2.[Soul Reaver 2][Blood Omen 2]

char0036 (Lightning Spitters)[]

Lightning Spitters, also known as Lightning Breaths, were a class of Demon enemy introduced in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain where they appeared as medium-sized grey skinned creatures sporting brown trousers with slicked back spikes protruding from their temples and smaller spikes along their shoulders and back.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Alongside melee attacks they demonstrated an affinity for electricity and were able to spit fast moving lightning/electric bolts from their mouths. They were notably smaller and more agile than their demon brethren.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1] Kain would first encounter these demons in the ruined sections of Avernus city and most would be encountered in the ruined Avernus and the Hell Realm. However one could also be found in the Spirit Wrack Dungeon.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen/9]

Like the other Demon classes, Lightning Spitters were some of the most dangerous enemies that Kain could encounter with formidable endurance (80 points), although they only attacked with a range homing lightning attack with a relatively weak power for a demon (15 points). Only poisoned Green blood could be gleaned from them.[Blood Omen][1]

These demons did not explicitly appear in later titles, however they bore some similarities to the Lightning Demons seen in Soul Reaver 2 and the related Lightning Demons of Defiance.[Soul Reaver 2][Defiance]

char0143(Purple Ogres)[]

Purple Ogres were a class of enemy introduced in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain where they were portrayed as large purple skinned creatures sporting brown trousers with spikes protruding from their temples, shoulders and back. They were effectively a larger version of the regular green Ogres.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Despite their fearsome appearance, the Purple Ogres were perhaps the weakest of the Demon class enemies - although they were still dangerous enemies. They had considerable endurance (50 points) and decent attack power (15 points each strike in a double combo), long reach, , and only poisoned Green blood to yield.[Blood Omen][1] Like the rest of the Demons, the Purple Ogres were encountered when Kain infiltrated Avernus, however they were much rarer than their demon counterparts and were only found in one location - in Azimuth's boss encounter within Avernus Cathedral.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen strategy guide]

These demons did not explicitly appear in later titles, however they bore some similarities to the Gas demons of Soul Reaver 2 and the Greater demons of Blood Omen 2.[Soul Reaver 2][Blood Omen 2]

Notes[]

"Come, my demons. Let us sup on vampire blood"
―Azimuth — Listen (file info)[src]
  • The overarching "Demons" term is used in dialogue, the Blood Omen FAQ and the official strategy guide. The names of the individual classes as "Cerebus"[sic], "giants demons", "ogres" "lightning spitters" and "purple ogres" all originate in the official strategy guide which also gives the alternative title "lightning breaths" for the "lightning spitters".[Blood Omen strategy guide] In game files the sprites relating to the classes are referred to as "char0021" (Cerberus), "char0034" (Giant Demons), "char0035" (Ogres), "char0036" (Lightning Spitters) and "char0143" (Purple Ogres).[Blood Omen] Fan created guides generally use the "Demons" moniker and sub divide by color, with the exception of the Cerberus which is listed as "hellhound"[2][3]
    • The Cerberi are derived from the Cerberus of Greek mythology, a multi-headed hound responsible for guarding the Underworld and the river Styx. Traditionally, the Cerberus is depicted with three heads, but Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain interprets it as having only two - this trait is more commonly applied to Orthrus, Cerberus's brother. Its ability to breathe fire is mythologically derived from its father, Typhon.[4][5][6] Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain—Official Game Secrets, the Prima guide to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain by Ian Osborne, misspells the word "Cerberus" as "Cerebus".[Blood Omen strategy guide]
    • The term "Ogre" relates to the fairytale monsters depicted as having a hideous human-like form and often associated with eating human beings, especially children. The word itself derives from the Etruscan god Orcus who was a god of the underworld and punisher of broken oaths, who was also noted to feed on human flesh. The same god is the root of the word "orc".[7][8]
