"The village of Nachtholm was typical of Nosgoth peasantry, yet amidst the farmers and smithies of the quiet country life prowled brigands and cutpurses."
―Kain — Listen (file info)[src]

Brigands also known as Bandits were a class of criminal encountered by Kain in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and fought as some of the most basic enemies in the game. They were some of the most common enemies in the game, found in numerous locations and frequently encountered in and around the human settlements of Nosgoth, presumably seeking to ambush and steal from the Villagers within.

Profile[]

"It's not safe around here anymore. Damned brigands and thieves in the wilderness!"
―Gypsy — Listen (file info)[src]

Brigands were an enemy classification introduced and solely appearing in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. They acted as a general low level criminal element making up the lower classes of Humans. They could be encountered throughout the world but were mostly found nearby human settlements where they presumably lay in wait to attack and aambush the villager classes within. Though not necessarily being hostile to villagers in the game, they were openly hostile to Vampires and served as a constant irritation to Kain on his journey.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Initially it was a particular group of Brigands organised by Mortanius that had attacked Kain and caused his death. These Brigands could not be avoided and would persist until Kain's death. Though it was technically possible to defeat them all, there only option was for Kain to enter a nearby building which would respawn the brigands outside.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/1][Blood Omen strategy guide]

For the rest of the journey Kain could encounter Brigands often as enemies and they had several notable encampments through the game, including one nearby Ziegsturhl, one in a cave nearby Nachtholm and in a cave on the northern shore of the Lake of Serenity.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/1][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Classes[]

The brigands came in several distinct variations. The below summarizes the various sub-classes:

Men at Arms, also known simply as Mace Wielding Brigands, were a class of bandit that could be encountered by Kain on his quest in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and they were exclusively featured in that title. They appeared as Humans wearing a grey shirt and hood with a white collar and brown trousers. They were distinctively armed with a long grey mace.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

They could first be encountered in Ziegsturhl in the prologue chapter "Welcome to Hell" as Kain battled his assassin's. There they could be encountered inside one of the nearby buildings - but it is unclear if they were associated with the assassins. Thereafter the class could be found in the area surrounding the Pillars, in the bar and houses of Ziegsturhl, in the Repel Dungeon within Coorhagen, around the Stahlberg rampart and the lava cave off the Ruined Land.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/1][Blood Omen strategy guide]

They were among the weakest of the classes in the game with a low amount of endurance (8 points) and attack power (8 points). The class was not seen in further areas or timelines and were not featured in later titles.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

They class was unique in that only one individual could be found in the game. This individual was responsible for Kain's murder and was encountered in Ziegsturhl in the Prologue, spawning only once Kain was knocked to the ground, quickly walking to his location and impaling him with his sword, then was not seen for the rest of the game.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/1][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

The class was originally intended to feature in the deleted FMV of Kain's murder.[2][3][4] Another version of Kain's assassin that appeared quite different was seen in the Legacy of Kain: Defiance comic.[Defiance comic]

Behind the scenes[]

Kain's murder in the prologue to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was not originally planned to be a playable sequence. Instead a full motion video (FMV) would have shown Kain's murder. In this video the final design of Kain had not been finalised so he appeared with blond hair and several of the Brigand classes that made up the group of Kain's assassins can be seen - including one of the Knife Throwers and the unique class of Kain's murderer.[2][3][4]

Unfortunately the developers deemed that this sequence did not turn out as well as expected and so it was turned into a short playable section. Screenshots from the original FMV were subsequently featured in magazines, before being explained by Amy Hennig to The Lost Worlds in 2002. Bonus materials from Legacy of Kain: Defiance subsequently included a reference to the deleted scene.[2][3][4][Defiance]

Notes[]

  • Brigands are named as such both in the official strategy guide Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain—Official Game Secrets and the Silicon Knights Blood Omen FAQ [Blood Omen strategy guide][5][6]
    • The individual class names as "Peasant Swordsmen", "Man-at-Arms", "Knife Throwers", "Expert Knife Throwers" and "Red Men-at-arms" originate in the official strategy guide. The strategy guide does not distinguish the two peasant swordsmen" variants and labels both as "peasant swordsmen".[Blood Omen strategy guide]. Developer assisted magazine previews attest the titles "Knife Throwers" and call the Peasant Swordsmen "Simple Thugs".[7] Other internal classifications list the men at arms as "brigand", the peasant swordsmen as "brigand 2"
    • In game files the sprites relating to the classes are referred to as "char0000" (Men-at-Arms), "char0003" (Peasant Swordsmen), "char0024" (Red Men-at-Arms), "char0037" (Blue Peasant Swordsmen), "char0125" (Expert Knife Throwers), "char0153" (Knife Throwers) and "char0198" (Kain's assassin).[Blood Omen]
  • Although not seen in further games, similar criminal gangs and elements were seen in other games - particularly Blood Omen 2, which would feature the presence of Thugs and Thieves.[Blood Omen 2]
  • A completely different version of the gang that kills Kain is seen in the Legacy of Kain: Defiance comic, where the Brigands appear much different to how they appeared in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.[Defiance comic]
  • Several of the Brigand classes can be seen in the 'A Vampire's End' Dark Diary cutscene that starts Moebius's boss battle, where the models of the classes essentially appear as 'extras' to make up the numbers in the crowd.[Blood Omen/11]
  • Several locations in the game are noted as 'Brigands Bases' in sources. These bases are typically secret cave locations populated by brigands. Many are mentioned by villagers in Disguise Form dialogue.
