Blobs were an enemy class introduced and appearing only in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Consisting of a series of sentient gelatinous amorphous lifeforms, the blobs were typically encountered in underground sewer-type areas and were some of the weaker enemies encountered by Kain.

Profile[]

Four different types of Blob enemy were encountered in the game. The two smaller classes were largely passive, while the larger ones actively attacked Kain. Blobs were not vulnerable to Control Mind, but could be possessed using Spirit Wrack. Blobs notably possessed Green blood - potentially implying that they were some sort of mutation - which made the use of Blood Gout, Blood Shower and the Flesh Armor inadvisable.[Blood Omen]

char0018(Purple Slimes)[]

Purple Slimes were a group of gelatinous lifeforms encountered in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain consisting of a large purple or pink blob which would attack by swiping itself in a whip motion. Purple slimes were could be encountered inside Nupraptor's Retreat, the Blood Gout Dungeon and the Oracle's Cave. Unlike their smaller counterparts the Purple Slimes were aggressive and would actively charge and attack Kain when he was in range.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3][Blood Omen/5][Blood Omen/6]

Purples Slimes were fairly hardy enemies with 40 health points. Their attacks, although looking powerful, were fairly weak and caused much the same damage as the smaller jellies at 5 hit points. Kain did not issue any comment on them during his travels and their background is ultimately unexplained.[Blood Omen][1]

char0150(Jelly)[]

Jellies were a group of gelatinous lifeforms encountered in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain consisting of a small purple blob which caused damage on contact. Jellies could be encountered within Nupraptor's Retreat, the Blood Gout Dungeon, the Oracle's Cave and the Willendorf-Stahlberg tunnels. They appeared to wander aimlessly, moving around a set area but making no effort to follow or attack Kain, save for exploding on impact.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3][Blood Omen/5][Blood Omen/6][Blood Omen/9]

They had exceedingly low endurance (1 point), and were hence easily destroyed. The damage dealt but contact was also fairly minimal (5 points) registering them as something of a mild nuisance. Kain did not issue any comment on them during his travels and their background is ultimately unexplained.[Blood Omen][1]

char0151(Green Jelly)[]

Green Jellies were a group of gelatinous lifeforms encountered in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain consisting of a small green blob which caused damage on contact. Jellies could be encountered within Nupraptor's Retreat, the Blood Gout Dungeon, the sewers beneath Avernus, the Oracle's Cave and the Willendorf-Stahlberg tunnels. They could also be spawned from the lesser-spotted 'Slime' variant blob. Like the other small 'Jelly' class, the Green Jellies appeared to wander aimlessly around a set area.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3][Blood Omen/5][Blood Omen/6][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen/9]

They also had incredibly low endurance (1 point), which made them fragile and easily destroyed, and bore an attack that caused little damage (5 points) - again making them more of a nuisance than a true threat. Kain did not issue any comment on them during his travels and their background is ultimately unexplained.[Blood Omen][1]

char0152(Slime)[]

Slimes were a group of gelatinous lifeforms encountered in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain consisting of a green blob which would spawn the smaller green jellies. Slimes were could be encountered within Nupraptor's Retreat, the sewers beneath Avernus and the Willendorf-Stahlberg tunnels, however they also had an interesting bug which meant that technically none appeared in the final game.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen/9]

According to game files they are present but they cannot be seen in game where their location can only be deduced by the spawning of green jellies. In the July 12th alpha versions of the game they are present but static and by the beta version they are invisible. The full range of their movement can be pieced together from their sprite files but can only be observed in game in the July 15th alpha version which has them spawning green jellies that rapidly move toward and home in on the player. In beta and retail version they cannot be attacked in any way. In some locations the presence of Slimes in earlier versions was swapped for other classes in later builds.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/3][Blood Omen/8][Blood Omen/9][2][3][4][3]

Examination reveals that the Slimes had much the same endurance as their 'Purple Slime' brethren at 40 hit points but their attack were based purely on the explosive capabilities of their 'Green Jelly' spawns which caused only low level damage (5 points). Like other Blobs the Slimes had Green blood making spells such as Blood Gout, Blood Shower and the Flesh Armor inadvisable, however in the beta and retail versions none was effective against them anyway.[Blood Omen][1]

Notes[]

  • Blobs are named in the official guide Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain—Official Game Secrets alternatively as "Jellies" and "Blobs".[Blood Omen strategy guide] Blood Omen fan recreation Blood Omnicide uses the terms "slime" and "mucus", while other fan sources also favour the "slime" label.[1][5][6] In game files the classes are referred to as "char0018" for the large purple variant, "char0150" for the small blue variant, "char0151" for the small green variant and "char0152" for the large green variant.[Blood Omen]
    • Blobs appear to be based upon real life organisms such as the Slime Mold which are single celled organisms that can bind together with others to form gelatinous masses in times of supply shortages. These masses can display signs of intelligence, including complex puzzle solving despite the lack of a brain. Cult 1950's Sci-Fi Horror Film The Blob also featured a large gelatinous mass as a monster - this creature was inspired by tales of 'Star Jelly' - with the Slime Mold among the more popular explanations for the phenomenon.[7][8][9]
