"Willendorf, proud defender of the Realm, with its Warrior Elite and mighty ruler King Ottmar. The Lion Throne had once held my allegiance. But Willendorf’s days of glory had passed; it was the last bastion against an unruly future."
―Kain — Listen (file info)[src]

The Soldiers of the Army of the Last Hope, also known as White Paladins, were the warriors and guards of the Army of the Last Hope faction - representing the military of Willendorf and the Lion Throne of King Ottmar. They were featured heavily in the later stages of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain where they guarded areas around Willendorf and Willendorf City. They were also a potential ally in the Battle of the Last Stand, where they could be fed from freely in battles with the Legions of the Nemesis and its soldiers.

Profile[]

White Paladins were an enemy classification introduced and appearing solely in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. They acted as the guards protecting the city of Willendorf and its surroundings, serving to keep the peace and protect the human population of the area. They also made up the rank and file of the Army of the Last Hope, the military of Willendorf and the Lion Throne. They wore distinctive white armor with a golden trim and red highlights - sometimes accompanied by symbology representing the Lion Throne.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide][1]

Kain would first encounter the White Paladins as he made his way from the trail leading along from Avernus towards Willendorf but did not openly issue comment about them. The Paladins would continue to be encountered as he made his way outside the Spirit Wrack Dungeon, through the Provincial Mines, through Willendorf Town and through Willendorf City and Willendorf castle where they acted as the royal guard to King Ottmar. They could be found along the Willendorf tunnel but their presence thinned out on approach to Stahlberg and the proximity of the Land of the Nemesis.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide]

Kain's encounters with Ottmar would lead to him spearheading the defence of Willendorf and the troops of the Army of the Last Hope, populated by the White Paladins would become unlikely allies in the Battle of the Last Stand, but their subsequent defeat and retreat was the last time they would appear in the game.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide]

Their sprite appearance seems to suggest that they would have appeared as a non-player class in the Battle of the Last Stand, but no known build utilises them in this manner.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9][Blood Omen strategy guide][1][2][3][4]

Kain's initial appearance

  • The army is named with several variations of the "Army of the Last Hope" moniker in dialogue in behind the scenes sources. The official strategy guide Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain—Official Game Secrets also names the various classes as "White Paladins".[Blood Omen strategy guide] Other fan-created guides refer to them an "knights"[5][6] No official names are given to the sub-classes that can be observed but in game files the sprites relating to the classes are referred to as "char0019" (Knight), "char0020" (Combo), "char0047" (Great Sword), "char0048" (Swords), "char0052" (Sword) and "char0053" (Mace).[Blood Omen]
  • Kain's initial attire consists of a set of white armor with red chainmail and yellow trim pieces that bears a striking resemblance to the armor of the White Paladins and the Army of the Last Hope. A Kain explains in "Ottmar's Daughter", the Lion Throne of Willendorf once held his allegiance, so he was effectively a knight of the armor of last hope in his human existence.[Blood Omen][Blood Omen/9]
